Plot Summary: Gustavo intends to dig a tunnel more than ten meters under the town, so he assigns Mike a simple task: pick up an engineering expert near the border. Mike uses a hood, a truck, and other means to disorient the arriving expert. Once at the equipment storage site, the expert is to assess the project. The first expert pulls out a laptop, glances at the equipment, and confidently promises to complete the job. For more money, he even offers to finish a month early, as if it's a minor project requiring little thought. After receiving a call from Gustavo, Mike takes him back, throwing in a return ticket. The second expert, Werner, arrives and pulls out a notebook. After extensive calculations and measurements, he outlines various potential problems but still can't guarantee completion. This old-school and meticulous approach pleases Gustavo, who was observing in secret. He emerges from behind the equipment, shaking hands with Werner to collaborate. Meanwhile, Kim is at court defending minor cases. Although these are pro bono and offer no financial gain, she dedicates herself fully. In the case of David, a juvenile who threw a cinder block through a jewelry store window, prosecutor Bill insists on an eighteen-month sentence. But Kim meticulously finds a loophole: the police failed to read David his rights during arrest. Using this, she forces Bill to agree to an eight-month sentence, four months probation, with four months credit for time served in juvenile detention, meaning David avoids jail time. Saving others gives Kim a sense of accomplishment. However, this feeling also causes her to prioritize the Mesa Verde Trust Bank business less. Even when her old friend Paige, who works at the bank, calls about a major error in documents, Kim prioritizes Denise's case, who is facing her first drug trafficking charges. After Denise's hearing, Kim rushes to the bank, only to be met by Paige's stern face. Mesa Verde Trust Bank needs Kim to be fully committed, and Kim, knowing she's in the wrong, can only repeatedly agree. That evening, Kim reviews documents at home, making Jimmy, who is watching TV alone, uncomfortable. Earlier in the day, his shop finally welcomed a customer. Jimmy isn't selling privacy to his customers, but rather "encrypted phones" that prevent privacy leaks. People worried about leaks—like those having affairs, evading taxes, or harboring various unspeakable secrets—can keep their secrets safe with this phone, like putting them in a safe. With a silver tongue, he convinces the customer to buy ten "encrypted" phones. Seeing Kim work so hard, Jimmy feels bad about being lazy. He returns to his shop, organizes the day's sales, then takes a large box of phones to sell on the street. With his smooth talking, he sells over half a box. Even the local motorcycle gang, whom no one dares to provoke, buys the remaining dozen or so "encrypted" phones. However, three thugs had been eyeing Jimmy, and they mercilessly robbed him of his hard-earned money from the night. A bruised and battered Jimmy returns home in the early hours. Kim, startled awake, quickly helps him clean his wounds and applies ice to the bruises. Jimmy is dejected, recalling how a year ago, he could smell thugs from afar, and few dared to bother him. But now, it's different; a tiger on the plains is bullied by dogs. The next day, Jimmy returns to his shop, wipes off the advertisement from the display window, and goes back to honest business. In the afternoon, Jimmy goes to the DA's office for a pre-prosecution diversion check-in. In the restroom, he unexpectedly encounters a tired-looking Howard. Howard has been suffering from insomnia lately and still can't muster energy, even with 25 minutes until court. Jimmy tries to help, pulling out a therapist's number Kim found. But Howard declines, and Jimmy gives up. At the DA's office, Jimmy answers the DA's questions half-heartedly, worried about Howard's condition.
